I don’t have a way to describe what mids are, so to me, there is bass and treble lol. If the treble sounds natural and correct, and likewise the bass, I’m not sure how disjointed the rest of the sound could be. Would be curious to see/know of examples of this(what is awful mids, what is great mids, in otherwise great treble+bass). Probably several models I’ve heard before.
But sure, you can post your Best Mids! I think I’ll leave it out, for sake of simplicity(because I don’t even want to expand on the possible differences available for types of treble, types of bass).
Also, I think mids are much less of a technical achievement, and are much easier to develop/tune, than incredible bass or treble.
lol, haven’t really dabbed too much on the other Onkyo products, just only that A800 headphone. For Stereo Receiver, I own Yamaha.
I heard from like 1 or 2 Japanese folks saying a used Onkyo A800 isn’t too hard to find in Audio stores in Japan. I might visit Japan one day to scoop up more vintage and discontinued headphones from there. It’s usually pretty cheap too, like under $300 USD.
The Onyko A800 is a semi open back by the way, not closed back. But the subbass slam really hits though for a semi open back lol
Here is a really good review if you are interested in the Onkyo A800:
The Onkyo A800 is a semi-open back headphone. Protoss (the guy you quoted) created a mod to make it more open back, trying to hunt down a another pair of Onkyo A800 to try that mod…
Yeah, the Onkyo story of them going bankrupt sucks. They have awful marketing strategies for overseas, but honestly, I think many Japanese companies suffer in that department except obviously the big giants like Sony. If you are a fan of the classic original Sennheiser HD600 headphones sound signature, the Onkyo A800 is more likely the “endgame” path for it rather than the HD800 since it keeps the smoothness characteristics the OG HD600 had.
Also, if you really like guitars, Onkyo collaborated with Gibson for the tuning for the A800
I have to say this question and the subsequent responses are biased to one’s own current collection, which is not a surprise. Besides on a deserted island, how would you power them. Leaving out mids is a sin, my biased opinion not fact.
This is an interesting one! I suspect pretty subjective, tho. It should probably be split up into weight categories, 200-300g, 300-400g, 400-500g, etc. With some brief thinking, ZMF and Stax L300(L700 pads) come to mind.
Fair enough lol, would have been my island pick as well if the ms didn’t exist
Kinda a given, don’t know how the responses would make sense otherwise lol
I guess solar or wind or make a hydroelectric dam? Create biofuel from natural resources? I guess it would either need to be a prepared deserted island, or you’re dropped off with literally everything you need? Honestly the answers just bring a lot more questions lol
When the sun’s out at least lol. For audio applications it might pose a few issues sound quality wise though. You’d have to make sure you get a pure sine wave inverter and not a half rectified one and probably want to have some extra filtering or regeneration to at least get semi close to the quality of power that comes out of your wall. I know people who have solar hybrid systems for their house and note that their system can sometimes sound worse running off of their solar battery supply than the regular grid
,
You could, but I don’t really know if that’s what you’d be looking for in the end lol. I’ve got an article about it with comparisons and such for more info, so I’d make sure it’s actually a sound you’d be after and that your chain would be up to snuff
Perhaps - But I have sold or opted to not keep after the audition period several headphones for reasons around wearability and comfort. Personally I do not care how good something sounds, if it distracts me from my listening, it goes down the road.
By quite a ways imo. Caldera is a good can, but it’s simply not a flagship compete tor instead competing more with stuff like empy, d8k (og), rad-0, etc
Weight isn’t always correlative to comfort. And, of course, it’s subjective, but no more than our discussion of bass, treble and cans we would take to a desert island.
The Audio-Technica ATH-MX0 series weigh around 285 grams each and are EASILY the most uncomfortable headphones I’ve ever owned. Meanwhile, my Audeze LCD-X 2021 weigh in at 612 grams and are far more comfortable.
