This is an interesting topic. I think that when I was younger, in my early childhood, I would listen to music that my parents played, or that was from movies or things that were significant to me in some way. As I got older and went into my early teens, I started listening to much more edgy music, anything from rock and roll like Led Zeppelin to more emo bands such as Black Veil Brides. Honestly one of the main reasons I started listening to a lot of that music was for the sole sake of getting out my rebellious side because there were a lot of issues I had in my home with my mom. As I got older and became more comfortable with myself and more integrated with my anger as a person, I listened to less of that kind of music, and started listening to more genres and became more open to new things. I moved from edgy rock music to more laid-back metal and the likes. Started listening to almost any genre once I got into the audio hobby and people started suggesting new music I had never heard before. Now I am pretty open to hearing almost anything. I still do have a little bit of that edgy side to me and listen to that sort of music, but it isn’t really my identity anymore. I think that a lot of what appeals to a person musically is based on their personality, the culture they grew up in, and the way they deal with emotions and other things. Peer pressure (not exactly in a bad way) to listen to certain music is big too. Most of the people my age that I know who are in university mainly listen to the same music as the next person due to peer pressure to be liked or accepted. If you try to play the average song that is suggested here on this forum in the music thread believe me they usually think it is garbage. I have tried it lol.
I don’t actually think I do not understand any music genre or trend, I can see the reasons behind why people listen to the music they do. I may dislike most pop music but I understand why people listen to it. I cannot tolerate most rap but I understand why people listen to it. Same with country (which is the devil’s music if you ask me!).
So yes, I do dislike many genres or music trends, but I also understand why and how (although I am no expert in these things, I don’t study them) they happen and are the way they are.
