Mojo Audio thread, Mystique / Deja Vu / Illuminati

I may have just a few minutes ago. A discount was offered on their demo unit and I found it to be very acceptable.

@dB_Cooper we will now have to swap out Mv2XAs to see if USB or SPDIF rules the day.

Very cool! Congrats, a discount means he just wanted to get rid of the thing! LOL

always nice when things work out your way, I’m sure you got a good deal and seems like generally speaking these punch way over their weight and compete with the new stuff

Isnt that what most used sales are?

But yes, now i have some things I want to get rid of.

Can agree with that from my personal experience as well, the v1 and base v2 were nothing to write home about, but the upgraded v2s and above were where they caught my attention

Ben is honest it would seem.

While I haven’t talked to him much personally, he does seem like it from what people report

Yeah, be basically was trying to say dont bother with it unless you get it for nothing. Got to admire someone who could just say it is worth it, buy my stuff but instead is like ā€œehhhhhh those were my experimental phase projectsā€

I invited the guy I bought it from to join the forum. He got a V3

Sweet! Hopefully he joins.

Found some more info

I still dont know what the A stands for in v2AX, but it seems our units are close to a v3. The dac chip may only be 18 vs 20 bit, and those chokes are different.

Maybe the A is for analogue as it was mentioned before that it shares the EVOs analogue design.

It’s all about the power in the V3 and further still in the Evo… when @M0N doesn’t get rid of a DAC it’s because it’s probably doing something other DACs aren’t.

Someone asked for additional thoughts on the Mojo v2SE v2X…

Further listening it’s just a fun DAC to listen to music with. It can get more technical than a BF2, from Memory, maybe even more detail and technicality than the Yggy or at least in that neighborhood. But with a body and tone… not sure how to put it, maybe just meat on the bones type of sound. Almost exaggerated, but fun and right, but almost exaggerated. It’s what led me to let go of the Aural Audition amp and pick up a Bryston because I think it may be a better match for my chain. The BF2, the Aural Auditon and the Verite Closed seem too much of a good thing. lol

The limited input on the Mojo is something that I needed to deal with as well. Having only one input on my DAC and only one input on the amp, it was too limiting from a connectivity standpoint. Another area that led me to look at the Bryston BHA-1.

Looking forward to hearing that chain sometime later this week actually!

I will finish the commentary as if it wasn’t clear enough already if you run across a v2 SE or v2X or something as described above, better than a basic v2. Just buy it if your goal is to move to the next level beyond a BF2.

I could also see myself going all in on the Mojo EVO type of sound in a few years time should I ever run into a well priced used model.

It’s probably the most fun dac I’ve owned, so I was definitely going to hang onto it, it’s definitely not as technical as some of the other days I’ve had (although most at a higher price point), but for me it rides that line of warm, exaggerated, and enjoyable without going too far, while offering plenty satisfactory sound for the money. And considering how well it responds to better digital sources, it can scale reasonably well too. So it’s an easy keeper for me at this point

It’s really hard to give up certain things. A friend a while back said something to me that’s stuck. No one speaker does it all. I think that also applies to DACs.

I know that the expectation doesn’t quite apply once you get into the 30, 40, 50K component pricing level. However at t the 5 to 10K level, where I live that is a very real and applicable statement.

Yes very true, same goes for headphones, amps, iems, dacs, preamps, digital sources, etc. Anything in audio. But I think another important thing to consider is that you probably don’t need something to truly do it all anyways. You just need something to do most of what you like the most and do it well enough to not be bothered by what it doesn’t do a stellar job at. Audio is a game of trade offs and compromise, you just have to build a chain that priorities what you want and doesn’t focus on what you don’t, and you’ll be pretty well off. Don’t sacrifice things for the sake of ā€œdoing it allā€, but also don’t end up with too large of a collection of one trick ponys, neither are satisfying. Balance is hard lol

Still holds, just to a bit lesser extent, but still very there

That is an audio gospel paragraph right there… if only we all knew that right from the beginning when we start off on the hobby. It does take a while though to develop a sense of taste and then develop a sense of preference which IMO are two distinct things.

It’s also been a painful experience understanding how wrong I’ve been in the past holding certain positions. I am now better able to tell differences in components and cables and even recording that I simply would not have the presence of mind to even be noting just a few years back.

Eyes wide shut open slowly I guess. LOL

EDIT: BTW… I know I wouldn’t be getting into the new car purchase price of audio components. But I’m glad (my retirement fund sure is) to hear that even then there are shortcomings.

What I used to say what my preferences were and what I actually want to pick up and listen to today are pretty vastly different. Tastes may change but I have had a much better cross section. Things like the Radiance made me realize that i may like slightly warmer sounds, and that warmer doesnt mean treble has to be dull.

I’m not quite sure if I understand the difference. Would you care to elaborate?

Haha, and I’m also quite interested in hearing from your experience here  I believe I still have a lot to learn and your views might yet be enlightening to me.

Already mentioned that your review of the Radiance was the reason I bought them. I listen to the treble first whenever I try new hps and this is something I very much appreciated from the Radiance. With every new hp you learn something new

And to add something to the topic: I’ve been very much eyeing the Mojo Mystique for my Utopia - MZ3. It’s a horrible test for my natural lack of impulse control considering the MZ3 isn’t even with me yet.

Definition of end game for me is probably close to this only with the addition of ā€œā€¦ and not make you want to upgrade anythingā€.

Isn’t that kind of the hard part about endgame? Big part of this hobby is that there’s always more out there and to an extent you’re always gonna wonder what you can get from ā€œmoreā€ and ā€œdifferentā€.

I’m pretty sure that I’ll have to practice being content once the next upgrade would exceed my budget.
