I also think a major contributing factor to how much fun I’ve had with the Bolg over the short amount of time I’ve had it is how much it scales. It sounds awesome on my Exogal Comet+, it sounds great on the RNHP+BF2, it even sounds great on the Quicksilver+BF2 once I add an IEMatch. (Scaling also goes the other way: I don’t love it on the XD-05+, or as mentioned, on the single-ended out of the W2.)
So yeah, it’s been a lot of fun to try it on different chains, and honestly, the Bolg is making a strong case for me to have something nicer than a W2 for portable listening.
Holy crap the bass on these things hits hard lol that foster dd doing work down low, lots of rumble and tons of texture. Also what the hell is going on with this stage? It’s huge af and wraps around my head like crazy, I’ve not heard a presentation quite like this before in a iem.
btw using Eletech Iliad and final type e tips running on L&P p6pro
Man these are good, very good. Quite unique and very different sounding compared to a lot of the other totls I’ve heard recently. It has very exaggerated tuning, definitely not for the “true to life” crowd but that is what is so great about them. They make my music sound ridiculously fun and engaging. They have a almost analogue quality to how it portrays the music with lots of hang time on the decay of notes with lots of texture. Warm and bassy but not overly so that it messes with the higher ranges and subbass can rattle your brain in some instances with the right song playing. The mid range is ever so slightly forward with lots of energy for guitars in particular with a nice “crunch” quality to them. Vocals are sublime and I’d count this set amongst some of the best for it, female vocals can sound less “hot” as well here due to the warmth of the tuning which can be a plus for some people who listen to asian genres like myself that prominently feature higher octave range female vocalists. The highs are very tasteful and not overly bright but do a good job balancing the overall warmth, the estat treble is nice as it doesn’t come across as shrill or too thin like some estat implementations can. The stage is mind boggling, spherical in shape and wraps around my head but might be the widest I’ve heard in a iem.
I started with the iliad for the first two days but switched to the plato today and it is definitely my preference. The iliad made the sound too laidback for my preferences and and blunted a lot of the energy that I enjoyed while tipping the bass too much in the wrong direction. I might try the copper+ and 1960s 2wire in a few days
I sent these back over the weekend, after having 3+ weeks to demo them extensively. I just kinda wanna wrap up my thoughts by saying that the Thummim was incredibly impressive to me, especially for what they can be had for on the used market right now. It’s astonishing that they are slept on as much as they are, I have heard and owned other TOTLs such as Traillii, Erlkonig, Fourte Noir, U18s, Mest Indigo, Infinity Mk2, etc. and the Thummim without a doubt should be talked about in the same discussion imo.
I will say that out of what I have heard in the IEM space, you will not find a more fun and wholly addicting set, that works with a ridiculous amount of different music of varying quality. This IEM is just a pleasure to listen to and delivers music in the most exciting and joyful way to my ears.
After this demo they have shot up to the top of my list to purchase in the future. Also now that they are technically discontinued, I’m looking forward to seeing what MMR has in store for a successor.
