Ωmega (Omega) thread, 3 / 7 / 8 / Alnico

@NickMimi the LTA isn’t hybrid, it’s an ZOTL so no transformer but what I’ve heard/read is that unlike the MZ3 the Ultralinear an the Z40 aren’t going to show nearly as much different in tubes. The UL especially so.

@orrman fight with the Omegas when properly mated to the sub, should have plenty, I would spend a lot of time playing with their set up within the room their spacing and toe (too much toe makes them sharp and almost shouty) and most of all playing with the sub integration. The best way to get the body at least in the music I listen to is to make the sub disappear into the speakers so you don’t hear it when it’s on, you only notice its absence when it’s off.

The process may take weeks and weeks.

The Omega sub played much better in my living room on hardwood floors with my home theater so I’m optimistic it’s just about setting it up correctly

I use a large butcher block under my bottom loaded sub and granite slabs under my REL’s…

I’ve noticed that and was like “wtf just happened here”

I’m very optimistic about my setup and will take my time positioning it right. I’ll probably end up with a second similar sub tbh, already negotiating with TMR

These aren’t endgame speakers but I think they’ll serve me well for the time being and hope they get even better after I measure and treat the room

@orrman , don’t listen to this Potato :potato:…Play with those subs till they pressurize the room and punch the air out of your chest on the hardest hitting tracks…damned audiophiles and their audiophile bass… @dB_Cooper just says things like that because he lives in a building with neighbors and he can’t rumble the walls like the rest of us…:joy::rofl::joy: :smiling_imp:

I should send you guys a screenshot of the text I got from my wife working in her office next to mine in our house that says (in foreign language) “I feel like I’m in a club” from the walls rattling and the muffled sound of far away bass

My review of the Omega Junior 8 XRS in response to @ericg’s question on how I like them with my LTA Z40+. I thought this is a good opportunity to share a bit more now that I had them for a while.

First of all for reference I’ll say that I have different speakers from the ones I posted in the used deals. I have the Junior 8 XRS connected with Kimber 8TC cables.

It’s been a while since I had a decent floorstanding 2ch system in my house (last set was the funny named Italian speakers Indiana Line Tesi series) so it’ll be hard for me to compare it to anything or even speak about synergy between Omega and LTA which should be great but I think it’s easier to notice that if you switch something with another and hear the difference.

Also worth noting that I’m running a 2.2 system with two Omega DeepHemp 8 subwoofers (connected with SVS SoundPath RCA cables to the LTA). The subs are standing on these. Speakers are on their stands directly on the carpet.

Room is 20x13x10 ft and they sit on the shorter wall at one end, about 6ft into the room from the back wall and 3-4ft from the sides. I sit either exactly between them and about 8ft far or at my desk which is a straight line from the right speaker and about the same distance.

All my impressions will be from the sweet spot because the desk position basically allows me to only hear the right channel and is terrible (hence my new desktop monitors).

Now that we have all of that addressed, so how are they?

Overall - fairly balanced with a hint of mid-forward presentation that’s on the leaner and faster side of things.

Bass - This will probably be the hardest for me because I haven’t really used them without a sub. For me, without subwoofers, they absolutely lack on the bottom end. Extension is somewhat limited but depending on what you’re listening to, it might not be a problem at all since what they do let you hear they do well. From that short listening time though, texture and timbre seem accurate, it’s tonally balanced with the higher frequencies and grip & control on the lower end is fine.

Mids - I’d say this is where the Omegas truly shine. Voices are pushed a little forward but are presented accurately. They are presented clearly with no grain. Timbre is accurate as well. With male vocals and guitars I feel like it shows a little more the leaner side of the system on my chain. I would want a little more weight and meatiness in the lower mids / mid bass.

Treble - I know from others here that treble might be a break in thing with the Omegas but mine were used and did not present any changes over time. They are airy enough for my taste and although they don’t extend to the infinity, nothing feels missing. It’s not overly sharp or sibilant and with high quality recordings you can clearly hear even the tiniest of notes. No complaints but it is also personally my least important part of the spectrum.

Sound stage and presentation - This is where not treating my room yet and the driver size aren’t helping the Omegas shine. I can’t yet hear enveloping and spherical sound as I so much like with headphones or what I rediscovered with my desktop monitors. Width is more than decent, the Omegas disappear in the room and I can hear things outside of where they stand quite well. Depth accuracy is superb and what I think they do best in this technical category. Instrument separation is excellent. You can easily pick up the orchestra or band inside the stage and pinpoint where sound are coming from.
This is an important place to note that they are super sensitive to toe in - move them too much and they become a bit harsh and you lose a lot of the staging capabilities it’s like a different speaker suddenly. It is easily noticeable and easily fixed.
With the LTA the blackness is real and clear. If part of the band or orchestra start playing they appear from thin air immediately

Speed, micro and macro dynamics are both excellent as you’d expect from a very fast single driver. They deliver everything they can in low volumes as well as higher volumes but it’s clear these are not meant to be speakers for blasting any type of music in super high volumes.

Overall I’d say they are quite organic, smooth with mid-high energy.

As for the DeepHemp 8 subwoofers - they gel well with the speakers but I wouldn’t recommend them for anything other than their house brand. They are accurate and quick but kind of weak. They don’t get as low and loud as I’d like with some of my more challenging electronic music and that’s why I get subs in the first place. But for what the Omegas are intended and good for - I think it’s a good combo. I’m also sure that with a little warmer and meatier chain, the entire system can do a bit better on that end.

Will I keep the Omega system? haven’t decided yet. I recognize though that for some these will be perfect. I’ve learned there’s no such thing as the perfect speaker. You sacrifice in one place to gain more in another. For someone like me, with electronic music being one my primary geners of music I listen to, and who prioritizes bass over many things, this probably isn’t the perfect fit. But when it’s night time and I want something more easy going, keeping the dynamics and offering me a very pleasant listen to acoustic, jazz, singer/songwriter or classical music - they offer a lot for the money.

And since @orrman was kind enough to post his impressions which are pretty spot on I feel comfortable adding just a bit more on Ωmega Speakers, but in reference to their Super 6 XRS Alnico model.

This model is older and comes in a full sized tower format, Louis will oblige and build them for you if you ask, he still uses the same model transducer in various formats. The speakers are bottom ported and come w/ spikes that allow them a slight backward/reclining slant. The ports also come w/ foam plug inserts used to tune the speakers to your bass preference. That’s the main difference between the smaller stand mount speakers and his full sized towers, you will get a bit of added bass output. I use mine often w/out my subs in-line but the music genre’s played usually don’t have much low end output to speak of for me to feel the speakers are lacking. They absolutely have an A curve to their sound signature.

They are a quality speaker to listen to in a quiet low volume environment where detail and dynamic range would be a priority. They can be had in a wide variety of quality veneers, and Louis will help you service them if repairs are needed, i have never heard of anyone having service issues w/ older or new models when it comes to repairs. I’m a fan of this manufacturer and brand having enjoyed my own for 3+ yrs now w/ no desire to move beyond them.YMMV :man_shrugging:

Here is a photo of mine next to my Klipsch Heresy for good idea of size comparison.

Listening to your Omegas was what made me go with the 6.5 in Alnico drivers, I was so surprised at how fast and tight they sounded. My cabinets are the Junior XRS, so the same dimensions in height and width but they’re about 3" shallower.

Silly little mod, it’s all part of the hobby though. The old school Omega speakers had brass flat head wood screws holding down the drivers. I guess to save cost Louis switched to regular black steel philips screws. It all adds up I guess.

Anyway, loved that old school look as you can see in @NickMimi Omegas in the post above. They’ll patina a dull brass color in a few weeks as I made sure you get some good bit of oils from my fingers on the head.

I agree the brass looks better.

You can’t see it in the picture but it picks up the gold on the Omega badge at the bottom.

I’m in talks with Louis for a set of stand mount 8 inch Alnico. Olivewood is out of stock. I’ve inquired about rosewood, tineo, walnut, teak. Anyone have tips for order requests/add ons, if any?

I looked at Omega’s instagram for ideas on finish, because there are a few that are not listed on the website, and asked Louis if he had any of those. I also showed him a photo of @dB_Cooper’s and eventually went with that one, because he had just enough for my speakers.

Great, I did the same and came across rosewood and tineo, which I’ve inquired about.

@dB_Cooper beautiful set. What type of wood is that?

Sapele burl.

I continue to be shocked by how much speakers scale as you continue to refine the system upstream. I’m sure some speakers scale more than others. These Omegas however are the first speakers that I’ve pushed my system to the degree I have and so it’s the first time I’ve noticed the scaling effect along the way and they continue to give more.

Looking forward to trying the Spatial M4 Triode Master just to get a reference point of something else around the same price point.

It’s just a thought I continue to have as to how difficult it is to judge another system, another pair of speakers when you’re not listening in your own room on your own gear with your own tweaking. I’m sure the list of gear we’d fall in love with is probably much broader than we have time, money and patience for the trial and error and set up but I’m convinced there’s multitude of systems we’d find ourselves very happy with if we made that the focus of the hobby.

I’m still waiting to get word from Louis regarding when my Omega speakers will be shipped. I think that it would have been in the last couple of weeks, but I told him that since I was going on vacation, he may as well work on someone else’s speakers ahead of mine, so I have no-one to blame but myself. I’m hoping it’s before Axpona, so that I have a better idea of whether or not I’d benefit from a beefier amp than my MZ3, and also stop feeling angst every time @orrman posts an LTA amp for sale.

While I’ve been waiting, I did mention to Louis that I saw the USAM ad for upgraded speakers with Zenwave wiring and Furutech connectors, and asked him whether he thought it was worthwhile. He said that he doesn’t normally offer those types of upgrades, because he doesn’t think they offer the best value for money, but will do them on request.

In his mind, adding a natural wool lining inside the cabinet is a far better upgrade, as it acts as an excellent damping material, and in fact, he is going to offer it as an option going forward.

I’ve asked if I can have the wool lining upgrade (and asked how much it is), as long as I can get the speakers before Axpona, but Louis has gone radio silent. Maybe he doesn’t want to respond until he has a clear idea of when my speakers will be finished.

More to come.
