Three HiFi audio geek friends who encourage each other to buy way too much gear got together again and each came w/ a different Nelson Pass built First Watt amplifier to play w/ head to head on a pair of full sized Omega Alnico XRS speakers. The winner was the Ωmega speakers which yet again proved what an incredibly well designed, great value this simple, elegant and so very good looking, crossover-less single driver speaker truly is. Low power, single driver is a niche, within a niche, within a niche. That’s at least 3 levels deep within this absurd hobby
In my opinion really testing audio equipment is a weeks if not months long process and 3 amigos listening to one track repeatedly for a few hours is a fun day but not review worthy. My take away from a few hours of swapping amplifiers and even DAC’s on the Omega Alnico driver speaker is that it is a worthy driver that can perform and scales very nicely with gear built for it
The First Watt amplifiers allow you to take maximum advantage of the speaker and driver’s capabilities. There are small variations in flavor you can squeeze out using various combinations of Amplifier, DAC and streamer. The Omega speakers top off at fuse and possibly power cable swaps. I believe you can get hints of flavor variations w/ speaker cables but there is absolutely a point of diminishing returns. IMO maximum play in fine nuance variation is between DAC and Amplifier swaps. Material and design of speaker cable is most likely a nice way to finalize a system with these speakers but spending many times beyond the cost of the speakers on cables is silly and not needed, you can easily tweak well within relative budget if you focus on the material build of the cables as opposed to makes using intricate technology in their design.
I wanted to let my buddies @dB_Cooper and @Camus know that I had a great time spending the day w/ them and to remind folks that making audio friends you can get together w/ is a part of this hobby we should all take the opportunity to enjoy. We may have differing opinions, tastes, wants and desires but a bunch of audio geeks in the same room makes for a fun time in this otherwise lonely hobby. There will be spirited conversations Happy listening to all, single driver speakers are awesome and offer sooo much play value.
There is SO much equipment in this photo, the fact that we had a totally silent system configuration playing is impressive beyond words💪
