General Speaker Help/Discussion Thread

I have the KEF Q150 on my desktop and i absolutelly love them, the coaxial design is awesome for near-field. I also have a 10"subwoofer since i had to plug the bass ports on the speakers because they are close the the wall.

If you have the budget though, i doubt you can go wrong with the LS50 Meta.

I’ve tried them in two different setups. I think they’re clear but honestly if you’re gonna spend this much, you should go for bigger speakers. I have SP8s on the desk right now and the difference between the two speakers are comical. What’s crazy is they’re both similarly price but obviously space is the biggest factor.

Very nice setups; good to know that you prefer MoFi SP8s over the SuperMon Minis.

That raises the question: if the SP8s are good on a desktop, why not the KEF LS50 Meta or the Fyne Audio F500SP: all 3 are concentric driver designs, and none of them seem to be intended by their manufacturers for desktop use. KEF and Fyne for example both suggest 1.5m min distances between speakers (and presumably the same from speaker to listener, to make it equilateral).

But then, the Omega Compact Alnico I’m leaning towards is not intended expressly for desktop use either. I wonder how the older Omega (2008 release) would compare to an LS50 Meta or SP8 in terms of resolution and imaging? And of course suitability for use at desktop distances.

Plenty of people use LS50s on the desk for the reason you brought up. Concentric designs that don’t need to worry about the distances between drivers.

The reason I would choose SP8 over those other two those is the size of the driver. You can’t really beat physics. Bigger driver = moving more air. Bass is full enough for a desk setup that I don’t care to use the kc62 subwoofer I used to have underneath the desk. The sound profile isn’t overly bright or dark or full or lean. It’s a very easy speaker to use and for a price of $2k, it’s really hard to beat anything else if you can fit them on your desk.

Large-ish, multi-driver, box speakers with good crossovers that are usually less sensitive overall and feed them with good power, preferably not tube based. I’m speaking very specifically to the quote above. That and the inclusion of multiple good subwoofers is how I personally satisfy my cravings for the above mentioned genre and similar. :man_shrugging: For me it’s ultimately a preference for volume and articulate sound at the higher SPL’s knowing full well i’m not going to clip, distort or overdrive anything that requires a more delicate or subtle hand.

I think You own everything you require except for the speakers. Have a great quality A/B switch made or swap a pair of RCA’s when needed and you are done, heck you probably don’t even need these pieces I’m sure you have a spare output on that beast of a DAC. :pinched_fingers: Happy listening and happy hunting. :muscle:

LS3/5a will get you that beautiful midrange but will top off on volume and you risk bottoming them out if you like to over-indulge in higher volume levels.

The larger Omega variety, w/ the 6” Alnico driver pairs are my favorite and due to their higher sensitivity will get plenty loud, especially at your listening distance but will probably require a bit of space on the desktop more than you might be prepared to spare for their positioning and due to their larger size. These are Midrange Queens which will provide excellent resolution, detail and speed for a more moderate cost.

If utmost resolution on a desktop is your ultimate goal you may have to move up to your higher cost bracket, look used and i will caution you on power because you will probably be looking at a speaker with a complex crossover wich simply requires more power to get lively :man_shrugging:
Good luck, looking forward to see which direction you take. :+1:

Maybe Voxativ Hagens might work if resolution and imaging is the highest priority.

Oh wow, the Hagen II was just released and looks fantastic. Single driver and high sensitivity, like the Omegas.

Unfortunately $6k is already pushing my budget to the max, and if I got these I’d want the upgraded driver option, which would be $8k.

@Atriya I use a pair of Omega Super 3 High Output Monitor on my desk, with the Omega sub underneath. It has plenty of bass without the sub, but the sub seems to add some richness to the mids that I prefer (having accidentally turned it off and then wondered if I had a bad tube).

As you say, Louis at Omega uses LTA amps, and LTA also uses Omega speakers to test their amps, so there is a lot of synergy there. The UL+ has more than enough power, and even the MZ3 drove them well.

I haven’t heard the Alnicos but I have a friend who raves about them. But I’m very happy with my 3’s, which are super fast and detailed and work very well as nearfield speakers.

In fact, they even work as “extra near field”. When I’m in deep thought when working on a project, I have a weird habit of slowly getting closer and closer to my PC monitor. And then I’ll come back to reality and find myself leaning towards the monitor, with the speakers inches away from my ears, which is not optimal at all, but actually sounds OK.

Any opinions on Devore micros for desktop use? Easy to drive and easier to position too being sealed and all.

@127b tried the Devores on his desk, don’t think he liked them

I know you guys are discussing more expensive options here, but since the LS50 Meta is an option i would like to mention this here about the Q150:

There is an interview with KEF which this guy mentions and they say the Q150 is like 80% of the LS50 Meta, they used lots of the lessons learned from the LS50 into the cheaper Q150.

I can’t stress enough how good the Q150 are for desktop use, it really is mind blowing good! I bet the LS50 are even better, but one has to question how big of an impact the law of diminished returns applies to this specific scenario.

I will end up getting a pair of LS50 Meta myself eventually, but i think there is a good chance i will regret it when i do, lol

Found this about that interview:
That’s the designer of the Q150 and LS50, he talks about how much research they did on the LS50 and how easy it is to use the findings for the Q150 since it’s the same size with the same size drivers. At the end (like 7:45ish) the interviewer asks if it’s fair to say that you get 90% of the performance of the LS50 for 1/3 the price and the KEF designer gets a bit uncomfortable because he knows it’s true lol”

Update: I’ve made my choice. I’ll be getting the Omega Compact Alnico Monitor, with an Omega sub. Thanks to everyone who posted here with advice.

The other option would be the new Voxativ Hagen II (also full-range drivers, high efficiency), but I can’t ignore difference between $1500 for the Alnicos and $6000/$8000 (depending on the driver choice) for the Hagen IIs.

@dB_Cooper and I are audiophile twins: of the uncountable combinations possible, we ended up with the same chain: Weiss → LTA → Omega.

It’s a lovely chain.

Thanks a lot, but I needed front-ported ones, so I ordered directly from Louis.

Don’t forget to get some stands, or even isolation feet if you don’t want to tilt the speakers. I use isoacoustic aperta stands, which are quite reasonably priced, especially if you can get a used pair.

Looking to get a speaker amp /DAC for my living room found the smsl a300 and it’s about the price I want. This will be powering a pair of micca rb 42’s. are there alternatives to the a300 that im missing?

PS Audio Sprout might be a good more “audiophie” approved all in one.
