General Speaker Help/Discussion Thread

anyone that went to CAF has impressions of the Clayton Shaw Caladan speakers? Thinking of pre-ordering a pair but can’t pick a damn wood type lol

There’s actually a fair bit written in the 2023 CAF thread. One of the best showing of the weekend IMO. Interestingly enough they were paired with an LTA UL+ Integrated so keep that in mind as they’re probably lean towards the warmer.

I did not realize how big these are rofl

Told you, they’re huge but they damned good for the money.

More about the height of the room, how long it is, what else is in there to reflect or absorb, etc. I recall you had your bookshelf speakers on the floor until somewhat recently?

I will say if you are going to spend close to $5k on speakers, make sure your room, speaker placement is in a good starting point.

I was lucky to have @dB_Cooper and cousin @NickMimi over my humble abode on Saturday, with some minor tweaks they got the Decware Tube Tots to sound a hell of a lot better! Those are $1,200 speakers! The room is a component in speaker set ups, feel this bears repeating every time we discuss speakers as it’s often neglected. I neglected it myself at my own loss.

TLDR: try not to get too excited when you watch a YT about a set of speakers, until you have done some basic things to get the room right.

You got great enthusiasm, try to not get too caught up and overshoot without sorting out the elephant in the “room”

That said, and aobout the excitement. I was lucky enough to pickup a pair of Pure Audio Project speakers to listen to in my house. I got a chance to hear these when I went to audition the Lampi Poseidon in Princeton a few months back. The owner said he’d be more than happy to loan them to me.

I was so impressed by what they did in his small 14’ x 12’ room plugged into that Lampi all in one DAC/Amp. Fast forward, after a couple of days of trying to get them to work in my 12’ x 10’ room. They just sounded awful. recessed mids, heavy bloomy bass and simply flat as a pancake. Nothing I tried made them work.

C’est la vie. I least I didn’t buy them first only to then find out the hard way. lol

That is a shame :smiling_face_with_tear: Why do you think they didn’t work, not enough balance for the dipole or something else?

Honestly, I think the room is just too damn small! lol

I enjoyed the Sourcepoint 10 when i heard them. Very lively, they clicked w/ me. They were being slightly overdriven and chuffing which did not allow me to get proper appreciation for them. I remember thinking what great HT speakers they would make, especially for their size. :+1:
Congratulations @orrman , i hope to hear more about your adventures w/ them once you have had an opportunity to play and get settled in w/ them. Looking forward to it.

Thanks Nick, they are here for an audition, haven’t purchased them. It’s their first time out of the box so brand new with zero hours. I’ll need to let them warm up and burn in for a while to get a good impression of how they sound. Good to know people liked them though!

Andrew Jones designs good speakers, he understands the industry and customer desires especially when working within cost constraints… those tiny little B22’s i sent you cost a few dollars to make and were brought to market. They did what they did well and for their cost were exceptional…Gotta keep perspective and expectations within reason on some products.
I hope you like these, i had forgotten what a good option they are for their size :+1:

Thanks, my room is 13 foot length x 14 foot width x 7 foot height. My speakers are 6 foot apart from each each other and 1 foot away from the wall. The listening chair is about 5 foot away from the speakers. Currently only have a hobby room (no listening room) so all my hobby stuff is in there like my shoes in clear storage, figurines, computer setup, and Knick knacks. The floor is carpet and I have a rug in there (not under the speakers though, it’s under the listening section). All the stuff is behind me when I listen except the computer setup which is the side of the room next to the listening chair. So it’s a wall of clear containers filled with shoes and other things behind me. In the other side of the room is a big wooden wardrobe. The only thing in the middle of the speakers is the audio equipments, TV and TV shelf.

I know for sure that Nickmimi is a god when it comes to room treatment and speaker placement since he gave me advice on more than one occasion on speaker placement and it helped a lot. I know the rule of thumb is the further the speakers are away from each other, the bigger soundstage will sound (I think that’s how it goes and I hope I remember right lol). I think it might sacrifice technical aspects (maybe like imaging or clarity) or something like that, so it’s a trade off. 1 thing I learned on myself on listening to speakers for about a year is I really like the soundstage presentation on speakers. It just its presentation of this huge sound and how deep it goes is something I never get with my headphones setup even though it soundstage is pretty amazing on my headphone setup. I don’t really know how to describe it vs headphones, but speakers just have easier way to really get my mind in this “immersive listening mode” and it’s just sucks me into this little world of music. I get immersive with headphone, but it’s just not the same feeling. Also speaker overall bass is another thing I really like that headphones just can’t give me the same feeling, so those 2 are my targeted sounds for speakers. I don’t want a dark speakers though, just looking for a speakers with nice overall balance in the sound with a good boost in the bass region kinda like the Onkyo A800. 1 big issues I know my room has is the TV in the middle and Nickmimi gave advice to me is to get rid of the TV. I’m currently looking into getting a projector to replace it and place my audio equipments on the TV shelf. I thought about hanging the TV, but I don’t want to damage the wall, so the projector replacing it was the easiest answer for me.

I know I also gotta look into bass traps and treat the ceiling, but gotta get rid of that TV first.

I think for now, I do want to try to get my hands on the Platimon speakers (I don’t know why these speakers particularly, I just like the way people describe these speakers. I also just recently watched an interview with its creator and I like the way he describe the timbre of the instruments sound that his speakers make to recreate them in the interview).Just trying to figure out to get one demo as all their shops is like in Canada and 1 state in the US but it’s far from North Carolina. I kinda hard to find impressions on that speaker since it’s not popular in the US scene it seems like (but I’m also probably looking at the wrong places for information on that speaker). I think I might blind buy it in 2 weeks if no one grabs the one currently in USAM. If someone buys it in USAM before that 2 weeks, I might check out something else then.

I hang a lightweight blanket over the tv, literally held up with push pins

It does the job for now, going to look for something proper that can be pulled down over the tv like a framed piece and less ghetto than a fuzzy blanket. I’m not kidding about it, ask Nick and DB

Wow, now that is what I call thinking outside of the box lol.

You know… a lot of us call this a lonely hobby at times. It’s not one that you can share often, except through text-form on a forum. On top of it, this forum is unfortunately a bit more headphone-centric. The 2ch lovers are more a dying breed or a niche in this neck of the woods. I think there is really only 5-6 ride-or-die 2ch’ers.

Anyways, today, I had the pleasure of visiting, listening, and experimenting with some toys with @slowfan . He is a wonderful host and I even made him play hooky from work today.

We were able to play around with tweaks and listened to a few toys today.

  1. Puron plug-in filter, then adding an Ansuz Sparkz plug-in filter after that.
  2. Ansuz Mainz Conditioner with an Audience AU24SEi power cable.
  3. Audience Frontrow RCA interconnects.

Lastly, a side experiment of how much the P6Pro can handle as a secondary DAC to try to keep up with his server + DAC.

Fun times!

So far this year, I’ve done my dardnest not to make this an ongoing complaint. Glad you guys met and enjoyed gear. @NickMimi @Camus and I had a bromance on the 30th and it was great fighting that fight against the lonely hobby.

I think as a community, we’re doing our part!

+1 here to your estimate!

I hear this often, and feel that is a choice not a virtue of the hobby. Even during Covid I met up with folks I met via forums and such. It is a shame, especially some of us who are in proximity to each other should meet up. We organized a big group for CAF this past November and we all had a blast, for some of us it was the first time meeting in person.

First off, I appreciate @Veritas for trekking through 3 freeways to come and hang. In Southern California, crossing a freeway (405) can limit friendships to texting. Secondly, Veritas came with some serious gear… some would say all in the the black arts and snake oil camp. Let’s see if I’m a true believer…

After helping me reposition my speakers which I was aware were problematic (did not want to deal with the suction cups on the GAIAs which came off the floor with little effort), in went the Puron. The designer of the Puron recomends 30 hours, but this was a head snap moment. After 30 seconds, I looked over and said are you hearing this. IME, YMMV etc., this was dramatic. I would say at the level of a new cable +. The Puron smoothed out the edges of the notes while eliminating noise that was only noticible once gone. I did not think any detail was lost, but very helpful to have a set of good ears next to you. I’m currenly in the process of ordering two. I knew today could be expensive. Lol.

I have been curious about the Mainz and was luck to experience it today. Also, after upgrading the LPS on my TT, i had power cables on my mind. This was nicely sequenced after the Puron and Ansuz Sparkz. It just built off of the smoothness from the plug-ins, but this is where the dynamics of the sound began to improve. Both micro and macro, more on the macro, were noticiblely improved. At this point, compared to the starting point of poorly positioned speakers some might have though you were listening to a different amp. In my system this was stragely not as dramatic a change as the Puron. Relief. PC frighten me as they seem very expensive and vast. Good that it will be tabled to the end. At this point, instead of appreciating what has improved, my mind went to what I wanted more out of with the sound. I imagine a universal problem in the hobby. More air, texture, and holographicnessesess.

I actually asked that Veritas not bring his FRs. I really did not want to unhear them and my ICs aren’t shabby. Voodoo shit is right. It was spooky! It’s almost like there was a shinto spirit in the cable and it added more air, texture, and made the sound more holographic by building a new SS. All while making all the aforementioned SQ improvements just a touch better. How the hell does a cable become the stereotype of a dream tube amp? Whenever you see an Audience SX cable on USAM, almost all say reason for selling is that I’m going to FR. Maybe I’ll be posting that message sooner than later.

Good times. I got a bottleneck with my DAC, but it is 2024 and it may be one of the last pieces of this two channel puzzle.

It’s a good thing friends don’t come visit often then, it could get expensive. I will say, there is absolutely nothing like trying things in your own home on your own system. Your’e either going to love it, or know you can live without it.
