@don had a makoyi, I had also tried one of those as it was solid from demo, but I can’t give any real impressions on outside of that it was pretty great
Lol it’ll take a lottery jackpot to get me to replace my Wavedream and even then I’ll probably just get the WD Signature or Ultra
Ahhh yes our canadian representative @don . Thoughts? Did you get to try with the 2.2pf before you sent it my way?
I am a little more interested in the otl. It looks like they are going through some changes and they have 1 otl left, maybe thats a call to take it off their hands in return for a little off the top.
Right on. Thanks!
I’ll have to check one out some time. Such little info found on forums.
Thanks again.
Just demo with intention. Be reflective, know what you like. If it’s end game for you, then you don’t have to worry about resale value, right? Otherwise, it’ll just be endless decision paralysis.
In digital music If data bits, 1’s & 0’s, are all output and created equal, and digital source material along w/ the digital source are all basically the same because, you know, digital is all the same, i would not be sitting in my listening room with a stupid look on my face typing this partly cryptic message.
Every time i think I have a grasp of my own equipment I swap something around which allows me to have yet another mind blowing experience sending me right back to the drawing board trying to figure out and understand what good thing i just did differently. I wish you all my problems, they are the best kind to have and a great start to the weekend.
I saw in German forums not good reviews about their streamer gear. I think you need their full stack for synergy.
This and among other advice in the same direction I think is proving right. I’m limping into to streamer gang with the simple but cheapish ifi Zen Stream. If it holds or improves quality of sound and makes music easier and more enjoyable to listen to - it should be a primary focus. And if this thing works the way I’m understanding - it definitely should. Thanks for being right again y’all.
I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the iFi Zen Stream. I have had mine for about 7 or 8 months now and ive been extremely happy. The continued support and firmware updates from iFi is encouraging to see as well. I initially just used the Zen Stream software, but eventually went with Roon and use the Zen Stream as a Roon endpoint.
yah… Ive been meanign to write up my demo impressions of it for ages now and just never gotten around to it. I realy need to put some work back into that thread…
Read this as a reply to the video:

Digital in concept is “truly digital” since only two states exist. It is “analogue” in the sense that the two states of importance are within a (theoretical) infinite realm of values. Since this “is it there or not?”-value fluctuation problem is quite the problem Schmitt Triggers exist.
-
I know the Nyquist-Shannon Sampling theorem involves scary math symbols. Luckily Technology Connections made this nice video explaining it.
-
Computers just barely work to begin with. And computers, thanks to their speed make an incredible number of mistakes. Outside of all the conceptual problems, reality is very disappointing. Timings are a little off (thanks, propagation delay), current leaks (Flash memory is just a bunch of capacitors), etc.
And it only takes one bit flipp from 1 to 0 to make you rich for ever:
-
It is not known how hearing actually works on the brain level, maybe it is digital?. In case you figure out how it works, Biology Nobel Price is yours!
-
Well, no, we do not have 1 and 0 since those two are concepts to make voltage-high and voltage-low easier to convey. We do however have magnetic dipoles (HDD) or charge-levels in capacitors (SSD), which are then turned into voltage pulses and… You get the point.
-
The way data is held in storage depends on the type of memory used. With SRAM and DRAM, it truly is On or Off. Analogue computers are making a return for special tasks, digital is the prevailing concept.
-
Acceptable Voltage Levels is plain wrong as explained in the video. Not even going to argue with it since it misses all electronic concepts leading up to Logic Gates.
Again, Schmitt Triggers, Baby!
Also: Error correction exists, and with CDs, it gets even better! (and pt 2 of that video). -
Leakage limits in uV (10 ^-6)? There are (cheap) ways to measure nano Volts (10 ^-9). For considerably more money, you can measure pico Volt (10 ^ -12). How does he explain that away? Are all Physicists wrong?
Also: When you leak up to 1mV, I can just trigger at 2mV and I am good. Or drain enough current away to compensate. -
HOW do superconductors help with leakage? Wouldn’t that require super insulators?
-
“A powersupply which can handle 24 bit” does not, it just does. That does not make any sense!
-
“01101” on a 0V to 5V scale is somehow 2.10? I get 2.03V
(2.5*0 + 1.25*1 + 0.625*1 + 0.3125*0 + 0.15625*1 = 2.03125
)
On his “98% noise” claim, I have no idea what he calculated to get that.
He then goes on on it getting mixed with the input signal and… He lost me.
There was a post here about good sites/links that we can use for reference etc? I though there were some good places recommended to buy tubes, I’d like to find a reputable vendor that is flexible and can be “worked” with.
A requests I’d like is to send them about a dozen tubes and have them match them for me, is there someone out there that would do that?
Ask him, look at his followers comments, also people with decent knowledge. He is definitely not another buzzword-throwing-youtuber not saying he has THE answers, but his background is outstanding…
I would never claim myself an electrical engineer, yet with my “ambitious hobbyist”-knowledge, I can not make any sense of what he is saying.
It is like he got stuck in the 1970s.
Then again, hooking a cheap oscilloscope up to a DAC to see how the 44kHz noise he talks about (I think, he is not making any sense at this point) is not there.
Try some of these folks @dB_Cooper

Sorry, but he is not talking about DACs, nor any measurements! He is giving us music listeners/non-electrical engineers some foundation to think about it & not blindly following review stars.
He is also not talking about black and white. Therefore I don’t know your offense about it
If you look about what he builds and tunes, I as non-expert would say: he definitely knows what he is doing!
He loves analoge and he explains way. He only uses a highly modified, old PS Audio bridge.
His “fundamentals” are at odds with the mathematical and physical principles on which computers (and DACs) are built on.
The offense to me personally is that the video is misleading at best.
He could very well be a master of analogue audio, his explanation of “flaws” in the digital realm are either severely limited by a language barrier, or he does not know what he is talking about.
The Makoyi is an excellent amp for planars mainly but I remember the hd600 sounding really really fantastic on it too. I did use the 2.2 pf as well and again really really fantastic. Can’t really comment on its character or anything though because it was so long ago. I just remember really liking it. I remember I was chasing an amp for the Susvara and felt it was leaving something on the table with that hp. I had no basis to think that though lol.
Resale is really difficult on that amp so I’d highly recommend hearing it first. I had to sell mine at a significant discount to move it.
Anyone know what the differences are between the old esoteric n-05 and the new n05-xd are? I cant find anything at all talking about it
