Friendly debate: What do we actually know about networking?

I guess that’s true. Maybe we’re just looking at it the wrong way. If it’s impossible that data could ever be wrong or be out of sync, it’s really how much electrical noise does that component create while doing its task. I highly doubt that SFP modules are tested for electrical noise because that doesn’t matter at all for their purpose. Same thing for network routers. Which means having specialty clocks are pretty useless but possibly having LPS could improve the audio by lowering the noise.

And how sensitive it is to the noise of the components connected to it.
I’m sure SFP modules for instance vary in the amount of noise they radiate/create, even if no one is measuring it, or designing for it.

Except that device would then add its own noise from the sources we’ve already mentioned. So we’re back to square one, unless that device is using components designed to introduce or inject zero or very little noise of it own.

Wouldn’t the receiver introduce noise and possibly jitter? That’s why USB is usually not preferred and many people add DDCs in their chain vs using onboard USB. That still doesn’t really explain why people hear a difference with Ethernet cables or switches though.

We had this on a broadcast router, it would disconnect from the controller and no one could figure out why including the company that built this $30k router and we payed thousands of dollars for their support. We figured out by random chance that it will not handle anything but a hard set 100Mbps. Yep, on a router that cost more than a car.

Like I said before, if you really believe noise is accumulating through the network chain and seeping into your signal path, run fiber or WiFi.

So here is something that I have been wondering about, majority of the suggestions for audio quality networking gear seems to be limited to 2-3 companies, no one talks about the others and for sure that is likely due to personal experience with those companies.

Why no discussion around another company making space in the audio network gear such as Silent Angel, not even a peep about their streamers or music server products:

on here or the internet in general?

SilentAngel / Bonn actually gets a decent amount of attention on Whatsbestforum. I’ve certainly looked into their products, as well as Ediscreation, LHY, etc.

Also on Audiogon

For me I try to stay away from these audio network switches because 1) cost and 2) I don’t believe they are nessesary if as I already do, take great care at the receiving end.

My opticalRendu already offers isolation from all upstream crap and I take great care to power it with a very good power supply. So there is IMO zero need to put money into a switch. If I was going Ethernet from a switch directly into a streamer, I’d certainly consider that.

Putting things into perspective though. The gains I’ve experienced after all of my network tomfoolery

If getting a new NEXT level component, say one that doubles the cost of your existing pre, or DAC or amp. Something major, is a rating of 10. using that scale;

Getting off the PC 10
Room Treatment 8-9
Speaker Placement 8-9
DDC 7-8
Speaker Cable 7-8
Digital cable 6-7
AC Power cables 5-6
LPS 4-5
IC cables 3-4
Isolatio/damping 3-4
Network 1-2

Guess which ones you should consider first?

Here’s another thing to take a look at if Ethernet is your only option, definitely on the high end and a lot of positive feedback from people that spend much more than us on their systems.

On here, haven’t seen it come up when the other usual suspects are suggested for streamer or network stuff.

My question was not for me, but for the discussion. I’m perfectly content with my Ethernet set up and access to local files via Roon.

My main areas of focus is a streamer with the digital outputs I need, and if lucky a built-in reclocker. That’s why I find this discussion around networking and Ethernet interesting yet not-applicable to how I budget.

My point was more that here, Sonus, there are plenty of options one could fit into this category, yet are overlooked for the usual suspects from Sonore, Small Green, Computer, and Uptone (which appear to be the same company).

What do you mean by taking care of the receiving end? Your streamer?

Audiogon is a rats nest of useless information for me, got 50 people saying one thing, and another 50 posting to post, then another to posting the counter-agreement. Net result, wasted time. Sorry, can’t stand their forums.

Now this is surprising given their stiff upper lip to lower priced gear, will have a look over there. Thank you.

So back to the main question I asked, why no talk of this brand or interest in it HERE in Sonus?

It’s just a question of what people have looked at or used.
There aren’t a lot of active posters here, so you’ll miss things, some of which might be good.

Thank you, this makes more sense and I have been lucky to find the smaller pool of this forum to be more informative than the larger forums for quality discussion and information.

this has been linked elsewhere but it’s much about what’s been discussed. a must to check out actually if the topic interests you

Most of us didn’t really explore Streamers and their effects until after this site started, so it also tends to be a bit incestuous in that space. I got off PC before starting the site Pi2AES, but exploring what better streamers did was a relatively recent thing for me and I think a lot here.
Network stuff I didn’t even look at until after that, and I suspect I’m not the only one.
