Nah lol, don’t wanna have to go ham on a new chain
Rip. Why not use same speaker taps?
Probably not a good fit. Also the noise floor is quite noticeable on the HE6
Really? RIIIIP. Besides that how u liking it?
That new purple finish looks nice but after having both a Pearl White Limited Edition (same tuning that will be in the purple) and a TH909, it is the TH909 that I regret selling and miss the most. Since I still have for the time being the same amp and DAC I ran the 909s with the majority of the time, plus the cable I had made for it, I have decided to re-buy a TH909 and it should be here next week…
Slave Fostex
HYYYYPEEE that’s dope to hear! you really did seem to miss urs so it’s awesome that ur gonna have it back!
I knew it was just a matter of time for you to go fo them and rebuy. I can totally see myself doing the same if I wouldn’t keep my th900. Regardless of the fact that I am using Susvara 90% of the time since I got it.
Yes, there was no concealing the fact that I really missed that set even when I had others that were technically superior all the way around. I really am addicted to that Fostex TH9xx delivery, and that’s what I want for when I take a break from the Susvara.
Not sure if this was answered somewhere else but, I’ll toss in my thoughts, keep in mind these could vary depending on the DAC being matched up with them but,
Violectric v281 - its not all that common but seen some good ones used in the $1300-1500 range.
Violectric v200 - see them used @ $500 or less
Liquid Platinum - $500 or less used sometimes new at around that same price.
Jotunheim 2 under $500 even new
These are all amps that I’ve used with the PW - my favorites of these listed being the v281 and Liquid Platinum. v281 with a Soekris dac1541 and the Liquid Platinum with a Bifrost 2.
Notice how they are all warm too lol. Honestly yeah, i feel like the warm amps with the PW would be real complimentary. I think the reason I wasn’t the biggest fan of it on the WA8 is just because the tube nature of it kinda slowed it down too much, but a hybrid or SS warm amp feels like it would be pretty great in general for it!
I really like my Lawton modded TH610 off of the LTA MZ3. It’s been my favorite pairing so far.
I know we all have different ears, but I’m not having any luck with Qutest + V280 combo I think I share LIttledrummerboy’s experience with the mids and treble, it’s so clear and transparent! However, everything else doesn’t sound right to me - mid-bass is thin, voices are thin, and very polite sounding.
What I’ve tried is swapping out the Qutest for BF2. It immediately addressed the complaints but led to another problem. The clear mids and treble allows me to hear all the nuances of the Qutest which I absolutely love - the resolution, imaging, separation. It gives you a small taste of technicalities from DACS on the next tier up (but sounds artificial though). So what impresses me most with the TH900 is how it’s able to pass on these fine nuances while retaining a fun V shape. The the mids and treble are so clear you can discern any changes in your audio chain. If I have an analogy, the Qutest is like water and the Th900’s mids and treble are also like water (albeit a different flavour of water). Think Qutest as Perrier sparkling water, but paired with TH900’s it’s a bit too flat like filtered water.
Anyways I digress, the BF2 while it added warmth and fixed the dynamics, I lost the nuances of the Qutest. It felt like I was using a pair of high-end gaming headphones, great for Netflix and YouTube but not so great for music.
Sorry for long post but I have a question for anyone. What would you guys recommend if I want to retain the details but add more warmth and weight back into the TH900’s? Is there something in the same tier as Qutest, V280 but with better synergy? Or must I have to go another tier up?
Thanks.
@M0N EDIT: I’m not sure if this is worthwhile, but after typing this, I’m playing around with Qutest’s variable line output, increasing it to 3V. I don’t hear any distortion so far and there’s a very slight increase in density of the mid-bass, but most likely a placebo effect. I also have the V280 set to -12db pre-gain but I can’t go past 8 o’clock on the volume pot. Do you know if this affects SQ? Maybe I could email Lakes People and see if I can lower the pre-gain further using their secret combo of switches?
So if you already really like the bf2 in terms of signature, you could just move to a yggy a2 og and get a very nice technicality bump. You could also consider trying something like a crane song Solaris quantum for something a bit more weighted but still pretty neutral. A merason frerot + psu also might be a good choice for what you are after imo
I mean running the qutest hotter will push things more forward and thicker so I’m not surprised, but it’s hard to get it hotter without overwhelming the amp or not having any volume range
it’ll be marginal unless you exceed the amps input sensitivity, which on a headphone amp you probably won’t.
Generally what your playing with is different areas on the volume pots, trading any degradation from digital volume control in the Chord with which particular part of the VIO Pot sounds best.
You’re probably better off going the other way, and setting the QTest volume so the Vio pot is in the 1-2 O’Clock position.
I found the Bifrost 2 and the v281 also to be a touch too “thick” with a sense of loosing some detail. With both a warmer leaning dac and amp it was just too much. It was recommended to me to try a Soekris DAC for better synergy, and that is what I did. The dac1541 still had all the energy good timbre and even better control over the low-end while maintaining a lively midrange that extended into the treble while not becoming harsh or overly dry. I will admit I did miss some of the slam the BF2 brought to the mix. I did not try a Yggdrasil then, but I think it would have been something.
Yeh, yggy a2 og seems like a safe choice. I’m very curious about the CS Solaris Quantum though. I’m guessing these are really commonly used in studios? Can you share what are the strong suites and weaknesses of the CS?
Interesting. I had the TH900’s stock cables replaced first thing with a thick copper balanced cable. Maybe I should try the V280 SE output and see if I can get the volume pot higher while running the Qutest at max 3V.
Yeh the BF2 was like a party trick, everything had a slam to it. I do miss it a little bit too.
Working the TH909 tonight:
roon → Spring3 KTE → v550 and it is
The configuration for this desk currently: roon core is a dedicated box with another PC at the desk acting as a roon bridge via USB (shunyata venom) into the DAC. Power cables are nothing bougie (Pangea AC14 SE) but I like them and I hear a difference over courtesy cables. The TH909 is using a Gravedigger Corpse cable terminated as 4pin xlr.
I’ve been running my Qutest at 3V lately (currently I’m using an LTA MZ3). I’ve noticed a bit more forwardness, but also more body and greater punch. I use about a 1/3 less on the volume pot than I did running 2V.
3V isn’t unheard of for SE output. Holo uses 2.9V on their May/Spring DACs. Totaldac also outputs at 3V.
Are you running the stock PSU? I’m currently using the iFi X-power and it’s a bit better than stock ($119 on Amazon). It produced a bit more punch and body (very small, but enough to notice).
I hope I helped.
