Focal headphone thread, Radiance / Celestee / Clear / Stellia / Utopia

I’ll throw in my thoughts. I like the radiance with the mojo2. Mojo2 has a good neutral signature and pairs nicely with the radiance. And offers EQ if you want to tweak anything (tho I don’t use the EQ but it’s supposedly a solid EQ).

For desktop, I can see the radiance working really well with something like the mz3. I enjoy it with the Bryston bha1 too. Off the Stratus it can make the bass a little bloomy. Not awful but more than a ss amp. That’ll be a preference thing. And the stratus works with other focals so I think that’s more on the radiance than the amp.

Overall, I don’t think they’re too picky.

I think this sums it up perfectly! Never thought about it like that!

The one negative about the mods i did is it increased the mid bass. While most may like that, i am sensitive there and it does feel bloomy. It hurt acoustic music a little as that bloom fogs up that area where previously it was clear and textured strings.

Man I really think @Delta9K said it perfectly. About the stage. It’s narrow but holographic. I was trying to explain myself before about it sounding very spatious to me and I think the way you put it was just perfect!!!

In another note. I’ve been listening to my Radiance tons today. I usually only get to use it twice or three times a week for maybe 15 minutes each time. But today each session has been 25+ minutes. The combination of punch, mid prominence, good depth and W shape sound signature is just so loveable!

For past couple weeks, one of my girlfriends has had an Elegia and a 6XX on loan, and I got this text from her just now about the Elegia:

“So yes I know I should try the other headphones, but these Elegia ones are just. So comfortable. And make me feel like I’m in my own world. It’s great

I can appreciate that. When I first heard the Elegia I was completely wowed by them. A friend of mine called them the gateway drug of headphones - before that I was working with Fidelio X2HRs and Sivga Phoenix after the Elegia everything went uphill (downhill for my wallet). Even today I have a Focal Radiance - for the sound, comfort and style. And the isolation factor Focal close backs bring does help send you off to your own world…

What are some good options for upgrading the stock Utopia 22 cable? I have been seeing Lazuli commonly suggested without thinking twice, yet little explanation why.

My fear is that has been the groupthink option, whereas there may be other options to consider. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

You can check out my post earlier in this thread comparing a lazuli ref and nirvana for og utopia.

Also here is the danacable thread with some more detailed impressions you can check out

I personally like the danacable options as I found it gave a bit more warmth and richness to the headphone with a larger and more grand stage and presentation, with little drawbacks overall and mostly improvement in all other aspects such as resolving power, dynamics, timbre, directness, energy, etc. Although the coloration may or may not work well depending on the chain so that’s something against it, it does clearly lean the utopia more toward something a bit more fun and colored focus. I will say that the base level danacable has more apparent drawbacks and can sound a bit lacking in the treble, technicalities, and can be a bit smooth for my liking, but that didn’t happen with things like the ultra or nirvana and only very mildly there on the reference plus. All I’m saying is that I wouldn’t go for a base level lazuli (which I don’t think they sell anymore) and also skip the regular reference for the plus

That’s personally what’s been the easiest pick for me and what I’ve enjoyed the most in my chains, but there are plenty of other good options as well.

Another great option is a dhc prion4, which is great from a technicality perspective and focuses a lot on being very detailed, textured, energetic, controlled and tighter, and forward, although is a bit more on the cleaner side of things, and if you already have a forward leaning chain I do personally feel as though it can take the headphone too intense, but otherwise it’s another really solid option and I did like the pairup depending on the chain. I do generally like this cable more for my own chains with pairups like the susvara which I think need a bit more forwardness and energy, but with a bit more rich, laid back, and slightly looser chain I found it a solid option for the utopia in a different direction from the danacable

A brise mikumari ref2 ended up being a really nice balance with the utopia, a more understated approach sound wise, a bit more liquid and smooth than neutral and a bit wider than neutral but still very deep and still great technicalities for the price point, it sort of gets out of the way while adding a bit extra smoothness and space and maintains a good level of balance, but not to the same technical level of the prion4 and def not for the nirvana for me, but absolutely worth looking at for the price point. A more tasteful enhancement of what’s already there with a bit of added smoothness and space, and pretty nice control overall. I will say with the utopia I did notice that it favored width a bit more and lost a bit of depth which didn’t happen on other pairings for other headphones but it wasn’t a dealbreaker or anything for me at this price point.

I actually liked a nordost heimdall 2 as an interesting option as it really makes the tonality of the headphone pretty organic and relaxes it a bit as well, with a stronger focus into the micro than macro and great liquidity (in fact I might actually say in some cases it lacks some macrodynamics and is also a bit rounded at times), but with the right chain and preferences it can actually be pretty high value, but imo more pairing dependent. Sort of focuses a bit more than normal on the midrange and lower level nuance without pushing too far

I should note that with the DHC and Brise I’ve only been able to try those because I have DHC ultrashort adapters 3.5mm to utopia lemo so not native terminations, but from my experience the dhc ultrashort adapters are pretty negligible so I don’t really think it makes too much difference but worth noting.

Really think for what to consider would really come down to chain and preference (and budget lol), but I think getting off the stock utopia cable and to something else is mostly a win regardless of how it tilts, the stock cable really holds it back in higher end setups imo

Edit: I think others on here have also had good results with a Norne silver hybrid (Silvergarde? Vygarde?) but not tried those so can’t comment, only tried the lower end all copper norne which while good were a bit too tilted warm for my liking on the utopia

I like the description of the Nirvana, especially that last part:

“The Lazuli Nirvana FC is a hybrid design that builds on our experience with the Lazuli Ultra. The Nirvana consists of 33% more copper than the Ultra and a full 100% more than the Reference, with the optimal complement of silver to achieve the lowest possible measurements of resistance, inductance, and capacitance.”

:100: This applies to all Focal’s, IMO.

Note that he’s asking about the 22 Utopia which might be a little much fun and warmth with the Danacable for some people on some chains.
I had the 22 paired with the regular Lazuli Reference and liked it a lot, felt it was a good investment (used pricing) and general upgrade over stock.

When I got my Lazuli Ref from Danacable, Vinh asked if I was getting it for U22 and he suggested the Ref Plus for the new model and Ref for OG.

Oh my bad, missed that, haven’t heard the 22 and only the og, sorry about that @Camus

Interesting

I can see that. I use a silver for mine and I think it works well. Haven’t used the Reference but I think I’d go for the Reference Plus if I were to buy one.

Thank you @Towa , @M0N , @orrman , much to sort through here. The Nirvana is a bit too rich for me, given it is over $3.5k

The Ref Plus hits a sweet spot in terms of cost, while I have heard from a friend the Prion 4 is great with his set of cans, one of which is a Stellia. I am not familiar with Brise, I did a quick google search and saw they are in Japan. Hope I got the right company…

I do wonder how the traits that paired well with the Utopia first generation translate into the updated 2022 model given the tonal change. In terms of chain, it is mainly a DNA Stratus and a vintage tube dac.

Thank you again for the detailed input

That’s the one. I plan on getting their yatono HP model but still gotta decide on a few things. They make quality stuff though imo

So I’ve had the Radiance for a couple of weeks now and I thought I’d post a few impressions.

First off the build is exemplary, and I feel it’s the ‘nicest’ Focal that I’ve had in hand. The leather is so supple (I think it’s Lambskin), and the mix of matte and gloss black finishes on the metalwork is done tastefully. The copper (it’s definitely not rose gold) accents are a nice touch.

When I received them and gave them a quick listen I wasn’t very impressed, but knowing that they needed to burn in I wasn’t worried and I knew I had to let the drivers settle.

After a few days of playing a mix of bass heavy and pink noise/grey noise/white noise I sat down and gave them some listening.
They were better that that initial listen, but still didn’t ‘wow’ me. They were warm, but not as warm or bass heavy as I thought they’d be (I was worried that they’d be bass cannons, which they’re not). I also found the mids just a tad shouty even though there’s a decent scoop in the mid to upper-mid region.

At this point I had already received a cable I ordered for them, an Eletech Dante Series Inferno and I figured I listen with that since I wasn’t really impressed at this point (I generally like to listen to things in their stock form before tinkering).

Holy mole was it better! The overall signature was the same, but it was a much fuller, more fleshed out sound. It didn’t add to any one frequency, but rather allowed how the Radiance is tuned to come through.

Bass had a fullness with greater texture, the mids were still present to the same level, but less shouty and smoother. The treble is excellent, and I don’t mind the small elevation in the upper region because it’s not excessive, and I’m guessing they added it to give the Radiance a larger soundstage.

They have that wonderful Focal impact that’s immediate, and highly percussive. They also have the Focal trait of being transparent to the source that they’re fed and are very detailed to my ears. Micro elements are very present, but not elevated largely in part to the tasteful scoop in the mid to upper-mids. That scoop allows them to not be too fatiguing for those that are sensitive to upper mids/lower treble.
The general slope of the mids prior to the scoop can still come across as shouty to my ears with certain tracks, but it’s not terrible.

Treble is pleasant and airy, and even though it’s has a generally intimate staging, the airiness of the treble helps to expand the soundstage. Imaging is very good presenting things appropriately in the soundstage.

Fortunately they sound good off of all the sources that I’ve tried such as the L&P W2 ACG, and the Chord Mojo2. With the W2 they seem more musical/fun, and more neutral off of the Mojo2. I honestly don’t like one more than the other which is surprising given that the W2 is a dongle, but maybe it’s advantage is that it’s being used in balanced mode via the 4.4mm output?

When used with the LTA MZ3 they’re taken to another level (as they should be). Focal and LTA have a magical synergy, and it’s one of my favorite pairings that I’ve heard to date. The ZOTL circuit seems to really control dynamic drivers, and that’s especially apparent with Focal’s highly excursive headphones. Man, do these things punch!

It’s just a great pairing, allowing for the sound to flow through with great speed, and energy. All the details are there, and IMO the pair provide a very transparent listening experience while maintaining the Radiance’s warmer sound. Bass isn’t bloated or muddy, but very textured with fullness. Treble is sparkly, and images have a holographic presentation (generally how I’d describe the MZ3). It’s honestly a great pairing.

I’m really happy I picked up the Radiance. It’s warm, but detailed. It’s has plenty of presence (sometimes a bit too much for me), and although it’s intimate it still presents a quality soundstage all in a gorgeous, closed back package. They are easy to drive, but like most Focal they require quality power/source.

If you like a warmer sound but still want some technical chops, and are looking for a closed back then I highly recommend giving the Randiance a try. They’ve quickly become one of my favorites.

Lastly they isolate extremely well. As in IEM isolation, so you do get shut into your own musical world. Pretty sweet, IMO.

Great write up. My thoughts regarding this headphone are harmonious and I specifically picked them out for the sound signature and isolation characteristics based on reviews, and I’m happy to say I was not disappointed. I have yet to pick out a DAP, which is silly because that is why I got this set - to be my portable back to the office solution - but, I’m still working from home so my motivation to buy a DAP is not that strong and is easily trumped by other “things”. I am glad that you offered your thoughts on portable usage none-the-less.

What the Radiance has done is contribute to my desire to listen to Utopia, probably the 2022 but I’m open to demo the earlier models too.

Again, thanks for the write-up I’m already sold on the Radiance and it is a keeper but I had a resurgence of excitement as I read.
