DNA amp thread, Starlett / Stratus / Stellaris / Sonett

I bought the multi-pack as that had the quickest ship time, and figured it would be good to have other ratings for other devices using that size and type of fuse. Plus dirt cheap :joy:

I made a bit of noise about it in the “Dubstep Girl” rectifier thread last year, as that is where there was an abundance of Elrog discussion.

Oh ok lol. Yeah I picked up that pack. Should be here 30 Dec.

I was looking at some local stores but Lowe’s only have fast acting.

I’m not worried about getting the Elrog working before the pack comes, just looking to get it running with a normal 5U4G over Christmas.

I’ll keep looking around.

Thanks to everyone for the assistance and info regarding this. I had heard about the WA33 issue but not off a DNA.

Heard the same. Kinda wild. Maybe there’s a reason Elrog wasn’t making anymore rectifiers for the foreseeable future.

Got it, the only decware I was considering was the ZMF collab which I have heard before. I suppose I’ve tried another one though I’m not sure the name but I couldn’t get past the separate volume controls for each channel

The taboo had this. Its not my favorite thing to have seperate volume controls but it wasnt the worst either.

there are 2 known issues with the Elrog 5u4G:

  1. Blowing fuses (which hasn’t happened to me with a 2A fuse).
  2. External noise, bloody thing vibrates to a distracting degree if you are near it. Damping rings help. I emailed the Elrog guy about it and his reply was that the vibration wouldnt hamper the electrical function of the tube but I found it telling he made no comment on if it affects sound quality. Never had any other 5u4 buzz on me.

I sit near my amp so I could hear the noise, but I rarely use the Elrog so it’s a moot point.

How hard is it to remove the base of a DNA to look inside? Anyone have any experience. I don’t want to mess with anything, just check to see how it looks after my faulty Elrog.

You have a screw driver? I would only open if Donald gives you the okay, only because of warranty coverage. It’s not hard to open up, need to make sure it’s laid properly to avoid any stress from the heavy ass transformers and chokes!

Gotcha, well if it’s not as simple as the A&S design or some others then I’ll just assume it’s fine since it works fine.

I would lay it upside down on a soft area prior to but it sounds like it’s a little harder than I assumed.

I don’t want to bother Donald anymore than I already have with the fuse and Elrog questions.

I found this pic and wanted to check.

Flip it on its back, those aluminum boxes and power transformer will need something like a hardback book to even out and kept it stable. Then open her up.

That pic has the XLR input, you can see the input transformers there on the bottom half, looks a bit different and could be component changes based on improvements.

Edit: one thing to add, those screws will snap easily so be careful when screwing the bottom cover back up. I’ve snapped two :weary:

Yeah I think this was the first one. It’s from headfi. Cableguy.

The screws that connect the bottom are located on the top right? I don’t see any screws on the bottom.

No, there are screws along the edge of the bottom, there should be 3 along the long side, and 4 on the short side (might be 3 too).

Oh ok, yeah they’re tiny and flush. I did a Quick Look the other day and didn’t mess with it too much. Cool, I’ll think about it and probably hit up Donald prior to just to be safe.

Did you take it off just to look or to add or fix something?

Honestly, hit Donald up. He won’t be annoyed or anything. He would rather you talk to him before, best case he can walk you through some testing if needed.

Ssshhhh, I will not confirm or deny :joy:

I already had a full picture of the inside from Donald when he finished building it.

I wanted to peek at the 1/4 input, I thought the 1/4” felt loose so I wanted to physically check. The glue used to hold it in place came loose.
