Aqua dac thread, La Voce / La Scala / Formula xHD / LinQ

Cabel arrived today and I picked up also usb cable from dh labs just to have something nicer. Curious to try and see if I hear a difference.

I bought also supra usb for my wife as I only have noname and short cable now.

@M0N how does La Voce pairs with violectric amps? I saw you had it on dac list for Nimbus us4+ in totl thread.
Can you share some thoughts also on new/old vio with connection also to what I have? It seems like a safe pick regardless if I ever decide to move to utopia or higher end planars but niimbus is a bit out of price range for now.

Also how are those amps with IEMs?

Canā€™t speak to the La Voce pairing, but I did run some IEMs on the V281 while I had it, and thought it did a surprisingly good job. The noise floor was lower than expected, with a relatively black background. Granted, I was primarily running Jomo Trinity SS, which is a harder to drive set, but I donā€™t recall having issues with other sets either. For anything as sensitive as Andros, you may still need something like an iematch.

Yeah I am considering iematch as well for my soloist. I use my iems with it but the noise floor is bothering me a bit same applies to th900 on medium gain it is there from moment I plug them in. Will get supercharger but not sure that will eliminate it at least for th900

It pairs well, leads to an overall pretty neutral slightly softer pairing, good for if you wanted something very balanced without being forward or harder edged (in comparison to like a berkeley alpha series 2 for example). Overall well balanced and capable with a bit of extra organicness, perhaps only thing Iā€™d want more of there is bass impact/slam or bass control/grip.

For the niimbus, Iā€™d honestly suggest skipping it and going for a v550 pro instead, I like the voicing of that amp more, and technicality wise itā€™s close enough to the niimbus that I donā€™t see the worthwhileness of the extra cost there. For what you have it should all pair pretty well, generally a neutral cleaner signature with a slight bit of warmth and fun, stage is accurate and is pretty dynamically alive. The older vio would pair well too, although it wouldnā€™t be as technically capable and itā€™s signature leans more toward warmer, wider, smoother and relaxed

I suppose still relatively solid for hek/susvara/utopia?

Yeah itā€™s a good entry point for those headphones imo

The Amber is more resolving than the Lampizator.

ā€¦ uhhhhh hope that was a typo haha

If I had to guess, since he writes that the la voce has ā€˜better technicalitiesā€™ Iā€™m pretty sure he means to say, ā€˜The La Voce is more resolving than the Lampizatorā€™

should have read Aqua. ā€” Fixed

Alternatively he could have also meant to say ā€˜The Amber is more resolving than the La Voceā€™

Maybe, but I think he would be the first to do so so far if thatā€™s the case lol

Alright thanks

Is the pro worth extra 5-600? I understand that the difference is only volume control/pot.

ā€œWorth itā€ is nearly impossible to answer. But if it were me I would buy the standard version.

Yeah of course. Just read that you can hear that upgraded pot clicking while listening and changing volume and thatā€™s something I would rather avoid. So curious about what is the benefit of that upgraded.

I am sure there are some :upside_down_face:

The 550 pro has the 256 step relay based volume control, Iā€™d personally pay for that upgrade, given what the unit costs, but as was stated above value is very personal.

Is the benefit a more precisely controlled volume or is there a sonic difference as well?

I agree with whatever answer Polygon is typing right now.

Generally a relay based volume control or stepped attenuators offer some improvement.
Conventional pots even the good ones are a terrible component to put in an audio chain, basically itā€™s a metal wiper scraping over a metalized (or carbonized) plastic disk.
Relay based volume controls and stepped attenuators just stick high quality resistors in the circuit.

The difference Is measurable, the pro will likely have a lower noise floor, as to audible, I would guess yes, but I havenā€™t specifically heard them to compare, and it wonā€™t be night and day.
My argument is based more on the would I wonder what if, if I didnā€™t spend the extra.
